Formula
inches = pixels / DPI
cm = inches x 2.54
// 900x1800 at 300 DPI: 3.00" x 6.00" (7.62 x 15.24 cm)
// at 150 DPI: 6.0" x 12.0" - use for posters
Which DPI should I pick?
- 300 DPI - photo prints, brochures, reading distance < 60cm. Sharp at arm's length. 900x1800 is 3.00x6.00in.
- 150 DPI - posters, banners, viewing beyond 1m. Larger but slightly softer. 6.0x12.0in.
- 72 DPI - screen proof only; prints 12.5x25.0in but visibly pixelated.
- 600 DPI - fine art or small text overlays; 1.50x3.00in, doubles file size.
Scaling tip - when pixels are short
Need a larger print than the table allows? Do not upscale blindly. Instead halve the DPI (300 -> 150) to double inches, or pick a larger master (e.g. 1800x3600) and keep DPI at 300. Upscaling adds no real detail - viewing distance hides it for posters but not for hand-held prints.
